How to prevent tooth decay?

Tooth decay is the destruction of tooth arrangement and can affect both the enamel as well as the dentin layer of the tooth.

Tooth decay happens when foodstuffs having carbohydrates (such as sugars and starches), like bread, cereals, milk, fruits, cakes or sweets, etc are left in between the gaps of the teeth.

Bacteria that live in the mouth digest these food particles, turning them into acids. The bacteria, acid, food particles, and saliva mix to develop plaque, which sticks to the teeth. The acids in plaque dissolve the surface of the enamel, making holes in the teeth called cavities.

  • Even when you brush and floss to maintain healthy teeth, cavities remain everyday trouble that we all have to battle with at least at some point.
  • Check with your dentist on supplemental fluoride, which supports and strengthens your teeth.
  • Drink essentially a pint of fluoridated water every day. Each day, this is needed for protecting children from tooth decay
  • Maintain a balanced diet that involves healthy food, limited snacks, and green vegetables. Also, one must lower the consumption of carbohydrates such as candy, desserts, and chips, which can stay on the surface or the gaps of the tooth.
  • Rinse every day with a fluoride-containing mouth rinse, they have antiseptic components to help destroy bacteria that develops plaque.
  • Brushing your teeth at least twice a day helps to get rid of the bacteria. Ideally, brush after every meal and particularly prior to hitting the bed.
  • Brush your teeth to freshen up your breath and to remove bacteria.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush your teeth back and forth in a circular motion with gentle pressure to clean the surface of the teeth.
  • Make sure to replace your toothbrush at least after every 3 months.
  • Avoid smoking and consumption of tobacco as it stains your teeth and leads to various gum diseases too.

Accept it or not, munching certain sugarless gums can help to control cavities by increasing the discharge of saliva in your mouth. Make sure that you visit your dentist for professional cleanings and oral examinations to avoid an attack from the cavity.
